AI Defect Detection Cameras That Find What Rules Miss

Roboflow AI1 is a defect detection camera with an NVIDIA Jetson inside. Train a model on your own defects, from scratches and cracks to contamination, and AI1 flags them on-device and tells your PLC to reject the part.

AI visual inspection highlights a crack on a metal part moving on a factory conveyor belt.

Defect Detection Cameras AI Vision Solution

Defects rarely look the same twice. A scratch changes with the light, a crack can be a hairline or a gap, and contamination shows up wherever it likes. Rule-based vision tools struggle with that variety, which is why automated defect detection now runs on deep learning models trained on real examples of good and bad parts. The camera that runs those models needs enough resolution to see small flaws, steady lighting so defects look consistent, and fast compute right at the station.

Roboflow AI1 (opens in a new tab) pairs an 8 MP sensor (3840 x 2160, roughly 0.17 mm per pixel at 1 m and finer when mounted closer) with a 4 mm lens, electronic focus, and an integrated 8-LED ring light. An NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX runs object detection and segmentation models on the camera, so it can both find a defect and outline its exact shape. Teams use it for metal surface defects, castings, molded plastics, PCBs, and welds.

  • Featured: Roboflow AI1 (AI1-8MP-4MM): 8 MP sensor, 4 mm lens with electronic focus, NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX 8 GB, IP54 housing
  • Attributes: Detection and segmentation models on-device, integrated lighting, a stored record for every flagged part, over-the-air model updates
  • Integration: Reject signals to your PLC over OPC UA, EtherNet/IP, Profinet, or Modbus TCP, a PASS/FAIL HMI for operators, and defect events to MES or Power BI

Collect images of your real defects, label them in Roboflow, and train a model such as RF-DETR that learns what each defect looks like on your parts. Deploy it to every AI1 from Roboflow Deployment Manager. When a new defect type appears, add examples, retrain, and push the update to every station over the air.

Already have cameras on the line? Roboflow Inference also run defect detection models on GigE Vision and RTSP streams from the cameras you already have, so you can add AI to existing stations and put AI1 where you need a new one.

AI for Defect Detection Cameras Workflows

How to Setup Defect Detection Cameras with AI

AI1 mounts at the inspection station and connects over Gigabit Ethernet. Label your defects in Roboflow, train a model, deploy it from Roboflow Deployment Manager, and AI1 flags defects on-device and signals your PLC to reject the part.
