CNC Machine Tending AI

Guide robots to pick, orient, and load every part, check the fixture is clear, and inspect each part on the way out.

Robotic arm with computer vision overlays showing 'pick_point' on parts in a bin, 'orientation ok' on a held part, and 'fixture clear' on a machine vise.

Tend Every Machine, from the Infeed Tray to the Finished Part

Add a real-time vision layer to every tending cell with Roboflow vision AI for CNC machine tending. Built for lathes, mills, and machining centers where a robot loads blanks through a lights-out shift, one part loaded upside down or onto a chip-covered fixture means a scrapped part or a crash, and no operator is there to see it happen.

Locate and pick:

  • Find raw blanks, bar stock, and castings in trays, drawers, and bins, and send pick points to the robot, alongside 3D bin picking.
  • Check orientation and catch flipped or rotated parts before they reach the chuck, with keypoint detection.
  • Confirm the right part number is in the infeed by reading part IDs, lot codes, and DataMatrix marks, alongside part identification.

Load and run:

  • Inspect the vise, chuck, or fixture for chips, coolant pooling, and debris before every load.
  • Verify the part is fully seated and clamped before the door closes and the cycle starts.
  • Check the work zone is clear of loose parts, rags, and hand tools, and hold the cycle through a PLC signal when it is not.

Unload and inspect:

  • Inspect every finished part for burrs, missed features, and surface defects before it reaches the outfeed, alongside machined part inspection.
  • Sort good parts from bad, and send suspect parts to a reject drawer for review.
  • Trend results by machine, tool, and shift, and spot tool wear before it scraps a run.

Bring intelligence to every tending cell today. Stop misloads, chip-covered fixtures, and bad parts from becoming crashes, scrap, and lost lights-out hours.

Frequently asked questions

What is CNC machine tending with Vision AI?

CNC machine tending with Vision AI uses cameras on the robot or in the cell and a trained computer vision model (opens in a new tab) to find and orient parts for loading, check that the fixture is clear and the part is seated, and inspect each finished part on the way out. It pairs with robotic guidance and alignment for the rest of the cell.

Does it work with our robots?

Yes. Roboflow models run on an edge device in the cell and send pick points, orientation, and pass or fail results to the robot controller over REST, MQTT, OPC UA, or a PLC. Standard Bots robots can run models trained in Roboflow directly.

Do parts need to sit in a precise tray or nest?

No. A model trained on your own parts finds them in loose trays, drawers, and bins, so blanks do not need a dedicated nest for every part number, and a new part is added by labeling images of it and retraining.

Can it integrate with our CNC controls, MES, and quality systems?

Yes. Roboflow writes results to a PLC tag over OPC UA or MQTT so the robot and machine can act on them, and sends images and part results over REST (opens in a new tab) or to a database for MES and quality systems.

Roboflow serves as the vision engine, and your automation and quality teams own the robot program, cell safety, and the accept and reject rules.
