Measure Every Cutting Edge, from the First Cut to the Tool Change

Add a real-time inspection layer to every cutting tool with Roboflow vision AI for tool wear detection. Built for turning, milling, and drilling cells where inserts are changed on a fixed count to play it safe, a chipped edge cuts dozens of bad parts before anyone notices, and a broken drill shows up as a scrapped part or a crashed spindle.

Wear on the cutting edge:

  • Measure flank wear land width on inserts, end mills, and drills, and change tools at your wear limit instead of a fixed part count.
  • Detect crater wear, notch wear, and built-up edge on the rake face and cutting corner.
  • Spot the small chips and cracks that start a tool failure, with small object detection.

Breakage and tool presence:

  • Confirm every tool is present and intact before the cycle starts, and catch a broken drill or tap right after it.
  • Check the tool magazine for empty, wrong, and damaged pockets before a long unattended run.
  • Stop the machine through a PLC signal when a tool is broken, before it scraps the next part.

Wear you can see on the part:

  • Catch the burrs, chatter marks, and finish loss a worn tool leaves behind, alongside machined part inspection.
  • Grade wear by size and severity and trend it by tool, machine, material, and shift.
  • Set tool life from measured wear, so good inserts are not thrown away early and worn ones do not run late.

Bring intelligence to every cutting tool today. Stop worn and broken tools from becoming scrapped parts, crashed spindles, and wasted inserts.

Frequently asked questions

What is tool wear detection with Vision AI?

Tool wear detection with Vision AI uses a camera in the machine, at the tool setter, or in the tool room and a trained computer vision model (opens in a new tab) to measure wear on the cutting edge and catch chipped, cracked, and broken tools. It pairs with burr detection on the part and predictive maintenance with vision for the rest of the machine.

Which types of tool wear does it measure?

Flank wear land width (VB), the measure ISO 3685 uses to define tool life, plus crater and notch wear, chipping, cracks, built-up edge, and breakage. A segmentation model outlines the worn area, and a Workflow converts it to millimeters with a calibrated camera and returns keep or change.

Where does the camera go?

Most cells use one of three spots: a camera inside the machine aimed at the tool between cycles, a camera at the tool setter or presetter where every tool already stops, or a bench camera in the tool room where inserts are indexed and tools are reground. The same model serves all three.

Can it integrate with our CNC controls, MES, and tool management system?

Yes. Roboflow writes wear status to a PLC tag over OPC UA or MQTT, so the machine can call a sister tool, pause, or flag a tool change, and sends images and measurements over REST (opens in a new tab) or to a database for MES and tool management systems.

Roboflow serves as the inspection engine, and your manufacturing engineers own the wear limits, tool life, and change decisions.
