The construction industry relies heavily on blueprint takeoffs, which are detailed lists of materials and measurements derived from blueprints. These takeoffs are crucial for estimating project costs, ordering materials, and ensuring compliance with building codes. However, the traditional process of manually analyzing blueprints is slow, tedious, and prone to human error.
Blueprint Pro AI is transforming this process by automating blueprint takeoffs with artificial intelligence. By deploying vision AI models developed on the Roboflow platform, Blueprint Pro AI reduces the time required for a takeoff from weeks to just minutes. This reduces complexity for builders and significantly speeds up construction project timelines.
The core challenge in automating blueprint takeoffs lies in the lack of standardization and the meticulous detail required. As Filipe Mandes, CTO of Blueprint Pro AI, explained, “Every engineer and designer draws blueprints differently—there’s no consistent standard. You’ll see different symbols used to denote components or a wide variety of formatting conventions, making it a nightmare for automation.” This variability required an AI solution that could see and understand blueprints with the contextual knowledge of an experienced architect.
To address this challenge, Blueprint Pro AI developed a pipeline of 29 custom-trained vision models in Roboflow. This system employs a variety of computer vision techniques – including classification, object detection, instance segmentation – to process raw blueprints. This allows their software to quickly identify structural elements, perform necessary geometric calculations, and ultimately generate a complete material list in a few minutes.
During the model development process, Blueprint Pro AI started by creating high-quality training datasets in the Roboflow platform using real-world data they owned. Because the models needed to accurately understand the often arcane diagrams and markings in blueprints, they worked with experts in architectural design during the image labeling process. This collaboration was streamlined by Roboflow's annotation tools, which allowed the team to efficiently divide labeling tasks and quickly review and validate annotations for consistency.

Training dozens of highly specialized vision models is typically a daunting and expensive task, often requiring access to powerful, dedicated hardware and significant engineering time. By utilizing Roboflow's cloud model training, Blueprint Pro AI bypassed the need to invest in expensive infrastructure and could train models immediately, accelerating their development timeline.
As Mandes noted, “Roboflow provided the exact resources we needed to scale from experimentation to real-world deployment. Their tools made it easy for our team to create highly accurate vision models capable of seeing and understanding blueprints just like an architect would.”
Equipped with their sophisticated pipeline of vision AI models developed in Roboflow’s platform, Blueprint Pro AI is delivering significant value to homebuilders and setting the stage for major change in the construction industry. A process that historically consumed three weeks of manual labor now takes minutes, providing immense time savings for their clients and accelerating the home building process.
Blueprint Pro AI was founded with a clear mission: to simplify and revolutionize the construction planning process. Frustrated by the time-consuming and error-prone methods traditionally used in blueprint take offs and material estimation, our team of industry experts and AI innovators came together to create a smarter solution. Driven by a passion for efficiency and accuracy, we developed a platform that transforms complex plans into precise calculations in minutes.
