Camera Trigger and Strobe Machine Vision for Sharp Images on Moving Lines

Trigger the camera when the part is in place, pulse the light during exposure, and every frame comes out sharp. Roboflow runs your vision model on each triggered image and sends the result to your PLC.

Camera Trigger and Strobe AI Vision Solution

Hardware triggering captures the image when the part is in position, not at the next scheduled frame. A photo-eye sends a pulse to the camera's trigger input, and the camera's strobe or "exposure active" output fires the light only while the sensor is exposing. The short, bright pulse freezes motion and cuts blur, so a part moving at line speed looks as sharp as one standing still.

  • Strobe lighting: pulsed LEDs can be overdriven well past their continuous rating for more light, last longer at low duty cycles, and drown out ambient light
  • Encoder triggered imaging: a rotary or linear encoder on the conveyor fires capture after a set travel distance, so images keep the same geometry when line speed changes, which line scan cameras almost always require

How Roboflow Works with Triggered Cameras

  • Collect: Capture training images with the same trigger and strobe setup you will run in production, and upload them to Roboflow
  • Label and train: Label defects on those images and train a model such as RF-DETR, so it learns from the same sharp, evenly lit frames it will see on the line
  • Deploy: Run the model with Roboflow Inference on each triggered frame on an edge device, and send pass or reject to your PLC over OPC UA, Modbus TCP, or EtherNet/IP before the part reaches the reject point

Want AI without the integration work? Roboflow's AI1 deployment device (opens in a new tab) packages onboard AI compute, integrated lighting, and an industrial camera into a plug-and-play system for real-time computer vision, with no separate camera, lighting, or edge computer to spec.

How to Setup Camera Trigger and Strobe Machine Vision with AI

Wire a photo-eye or encoder to the camera's trigger input and the camera's strobe output to your light controller. Train a model in Roboflow on images from that setup, then run it with Roboflow Inference on each triggered frame and send results to your PLC.
