Classify Every Seed in Every Sample, from the Receiving Lab to the Conditioning Line

Bring real-time intelligence to every seed sample with Roboflow Vision AI for seed classification. Built for seed companies, testing labs, and breeding programs where purity and quality tests mean analysts sorting seeds by hand under a magnifier, and where a weed seed or off-type in a lot becomes a rejected lot or a labeling problem.

Purity and identity:

  • Classify seeds by crop, variety, and species with a model trained on your own seed images.
  • Find weed seeds, other crop seeds, and inert matter in a purity sample.
  • Count every seed in the sample, with each one marked and classified on the image.

Quality and damage:

  • Detect broken, cracked, shriveled, and insect-damaged seeds.
  • Flag mold, disease, and discoloration that affect germination.
  • Grade seeds by size, shape, and color for conditioning and sizing, next to produce grading and sorting.

Labs, lines, and breeding:

  • Give analysts a first-pass classification to confirm, so each sample moves faster.
  • Drive ejectors on optical sorters and conditioning lines through the PLC to remove off-types and damaged seed.
  • Measure seed traits across thousands of lines for breeding programs, with an image record for every sample.

Bring intelligence to every seed sample today. Stop weed seeds, off-types, and damaged seed from becoming rejected lots and lost germination.

Frequently asked questions

What is seed classification with Vision AI?

Seed classification with Vision AI uses lab imaging stations, scanners, or sorting line cameras and a trained computer vision model to identify seeds by crop and variety, find weed seeds and other crop seeds, detect damage, disease, and discoloration, and grade seeds by size and color, with every seed counted and marked on the image. It pairs with crop and weed detection and produce grading and sorting across agriculture.

Can Vision AI tell apart seeds that look almost identical?

Yes. Close look-alikes are where a trained model is most useful. High-resolution images under consistent lighting show fine differences in shape, surface texture, color, and markings, and a classification model trained on labeled samples from your own varieties and weed species learns those differences. Adding images of both sides of each seed and new samples each season keeps accuracy high as varieties change.

Does seed classification support ISTA and AOSA testing rules?

Seed classification supports purity and quality testing under the ISTA International Rules for Seed Testing (the International Seed Testing Association) and the AOSA Rules for Testing Seeds (the Association of Official Seed Analysts), and labeling under the Federal Seed Act (the US law governing seed labeling and interstate sale), with an image record of every seed classified.

Roboflow serves as the classification engine, and your seed analysts and quality teams own the official test results, certification, and labeling.

Can it integrate with our LIMS, sorters, and breeding databases?

Yes. Roboflow sends classifications, counts, and images over REST or writes them to a database, so results flow into lab information management systems, seed lot records, and breeding databases. On conditioning lines, it writes reject signals to a PLC over OPC UA or MQTT to drive sorter ejectors.
