Polarized Lighting Machine Vision That Cuts Glare for Vision AI

Glare on metal, glass, and plastic hides scratches and print. Polarized lighting removes it, and Roboflow trains a model on the clean images and runs it on your camera's stream.

Polarized Lighting AI Vision Solution

A polarizing filter passes light in only one plane. With cross-polarization, one polarizer sits on the light and a second sits on the lens at right angles to it, which blocks the specular reflections that hide scratches, dents, and printed text on shiny metal, glass, and plastic parts. The camera sees the surface instead of the glare, so defects show up clearly and consistently.

  • Filters on any camera: a linear polarizing filter on the lens, rotated to tune the effect, plus polarizer sheet on a bar light or a polarized ring light
  • Polarization cameras: the LUCID Triton 5.0 MP Polarization model with a Sony Polarsens sensor that places filters at 0°, 45°, 90°, and 135° across every four pixels, GigE Vision with PoE, and IP67 protection with an IP67 lens tube (LUCID cameras with Roboflow)

How Roboflow Works with Polarized Images

  • Collect: Capture images with the same polarizer setup you will run on the line, and upload them to Roboflow
  • Label and train: Label scratches, dents, and print on the polarized images and train a model such as RF-DETR, so it learns what defects look like with the glare removed
  • Deploy: Run the model with Roboflow Inference on the camera's GigE Vision stream on an edge device such as an NVIDIA Jetson, and send results to your PLC

Want AI without the integration work? Roboflow's AI1 deployment device (opens in a new tab) packages onboard AI compute, integrated lighting, and an industrial camera into a plug-and-play system for real-time computer vision, with no separate camera, lighting, or edge computer to spec.

How to Setup Polarized Lighting Machine Vision with AI

Fit a polarizer on the light and a second on the lens, crossed at right angles, or use a polarization camera over GigE Vision. Train a model in Roboflow on images taken with that setup, then run it with Roboflow Inference and send results to your PLC.
